Consider your options:
Option 1 - Buy from a store.
This option is the most economical if you
can find mud room items you want. There are
hundreds of benches, cupboards, cabinets and similar
items available on and off-line. Some links
are included below.
Option 2 - Buy unfinished
furniture.
There are stores both on and off-line who
specialize in selling unfinished furniture; the
advantage being that you can select a range of items
and finish them all the same way. The quality
of this furniture is usually good with wide use of
solid and plywood rather than particle board.
Something to be concerned about if there's going to
be water about. See our
guide to buying unfinished furniture.
Option 3 - Hire a furniture
builder (contractor).
This could be a consideration if you have more
ambitious designs or want items fitted or
"built-in". Here are a couple of useful
distinctions:
- Hiring a custom cabinet maker:
- Where furniture is made in a woodworking shop
using specialized equipment. This ensures
quality, especially for more complicated
designs. This method can cover both free
standing and built-in items.
- Hiring a carpenter: Where
furniture is actually built in your house using
basic tools and you will have workmen in your
house for as long as it takes. This is a
less expensive way to go for basic fitted
benches, shelves and utility items, especially
if they are going to be painted.
